How to improve your listening skills

Improving your listening skills for children:

1) Pay attention -- you'll hear more and learn more.

2) Listen for specific direction -- you'll know what to do.
3) Listen for the MAIN idea.
4) Listen for key words -- first, second, third, fourth...etc... before / after
5) Listen for the tone (sad, happy, loud, soft) -- you'll get the real meaning of the message
6) Take notes or make drawing -- you'll remember things longer with a picture.
7) Think about what you have heard -- you'll understand better.
8) Picture what you hear -- have a mental picture of what you have heard. You'll see things clearer.

Improving your listening skills for parents:

1) Be a good listening model by showing interest in and responding to your child's contribution. Need to show genuine interests, and children are always smart to sniff out when the adults are pretending to be interested.
2) Talk about topics of mutual interest and encourage your child to listen and respond.
3) Involve your child in adult conversation when appropriate. These experiences will provide a range of language styles, ideas and vocabulary for them to admire and learn from.
4) Teach your child how to use the telephone and note down messages.
5) Play games which provide enjoyment and teach listening / social skills e.g. taking turns, following directions, explaining rules and strategies.
6) Provide opportunities for your child to speak and listen for a variety of purposes, e.g. telling jokes and riddles, listening to rules and instructions, describing and remembering details or recounting an experience.
7) Make use of taped stories with read-along books. (These can be found from NLB.) This is an useful activity which links reading to listening in an enjoyable way.

These are adapted from the listening comprehension booklet, which we have purchased for LC. The author, Zenda Lau, is an experienced teacher.
We have done 5 LC exercises today, and I thought it would be meaningful to share the tips given in the book, and hopefully, we can get them to improve on their listening skills.

It is also interesting to note for the MOE new syllabus 2010, they are focusing more in the oral component. That is, there is decreasing emphasis on pen and paper components, and LC is usually an area which we can strive to get almost full marks to help them pull up their grades.

Character Development Workshop

What they have learnt from leadership Character Development Workshop:

A leader is:

C -- Confident (give it a try)

If you won't try, you won't know if you can succeed. It's okay to make mistakes. 2nd thing: Learn from the mistakes.

After several tries, we should give it a try, and we should improve ourselves.

An example: Walts Disney: a person/leader who didn't give up. One of the characters which he created in his early age, before Mickey Mouse.
Something to share about his failures and how he picked himself up from his failures:
http://www.successstories.co.in/failure-flames-inspiration-success-story-of-walt-disney/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4twUUA7IviM

Never Give up.

The activity: Stacking of cards

A -- They played a game of cooperative learning. From the game, some of them were given 1 token, some were given 2 tokens, a few of them were given 3 or 4 tokens. Some of them could not buy things....
What is the lesson learnt?

Some of them gave away their tokens to their classmates. That's what a leader supposed to do. :)

R --Responsibility -- staying true to the task. Completing it to the end. :)
E -- Exemplary
To set a good example. To be a good leader, we need to set a good example in our conduct (behaviour).
-- Listen Carefully to all instructions/rules said by teachers.
--Obey immediately. Do it now, don't wait!

--Set an example in our speech.
Use polite words and be polite:

Excuse Me,
Thank You,
You are welcome.

The story of Mambo, the Penguin (from Happy Feet)
They lived in Antarctica, a place where humans do not live over there.
Mambo was selected as he managed to follow his parents to the ocean. He followed the instructions which were:

"Do not stop until we have arrived at the lake."

Maths -- ordinal numbers

Things done and completed today:

The topic on Ordinal Numbers have been completed.
Ordinal Numbers stress on placing of the people, things in their positions.
They are also expected to be able to write and spell:

1st -- First
2nd -- Second
3rd -- Third
4th -- Fourth
5th -- Fifth
6th -- Sixth
7th -- Seventh
8th -- Eighth
9th -- Ninth
10th -- Tenth

Spelling on these words will be given out shortly during Mental Sums.

Within the topical worksheet, other words/phrases to be tested:
from the left / right, top/bottom.
They need to understand from where this is.

Other words: who is to win the race?
Who is in front of the queue -- meaning, the first in line
Who is the last? -- the furthest, away from the first.

Hypothetical Questions: If something is taken away, how is the placing being changed?
Strategy: cross out or cover up the one being taken away, then count the placing of the item.

Based on the previous unit review, the trend will be to have questions which are tougher and higher order.
However, the strategy remains: underline the key words, put down the placing (1st, 2nd, etc), then comprehend the question, and finally solving it. :)

Hope this posts helps.

Cheers,
Mdm Chan

English Unit review 1

English Unit review:

Although this is a practice, this gives a good gauge what is the level of the paper, and where are we heading. Congrats, the class has done well. The average is at 82%. However, there are 3 failures in the class, and we need to close the gap for the failures.

To those who have done well, continue to work hard. :)
To those who have not done that well, it's okay. This is just a test, let's just work hard for the up-coming test in Term 2.
