Mathematics Multiplication and Division
Mathematics Lesson Update:
When school reopens in term 2, we will start on Multiplication and Division of tables: 2,3,4,5,and 10.
Based on MOE Syllabus, these are the objectives:
3.1 concepts of multiplication and division
3.2 use of x
3.3 multiplying within 40
3.4 dividing within 20
3.5 solving 1-step word problems involving multiplication and division with pictorial representation
Their learning experiences:
(b) share a given number of concrete objects/picture cutouts and explain how the sharing is done
and whether the objects can be shared equally.
(c) divide a set of concrete objects into equal groups, and discuss the grouping and sharing
concepts of division.
And:
3.1 multiplication tables of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10
3.2 use of ÷
3.3 relationship between multiplication and division
3.4 multiplying and dividing within the multiplication tables
3.5 solving 1-step word problems involving multiplication and division within the multiplication tables
3.6 mental calculation involving multiplication and division within the multiplication tables of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10
Their learning experiences:
(a) work in groups to make multiplication and division stories, write a multiplication or division
equation for each story and explain the meaning of the equal sign.
(b) use concrete objects and pictorial representations to illustrate the concepts of multiplication and
division such as ‘multiplying 3 by 5’ and ‘dividing 12 by 4’.
(c) explore number patterns in the multiplication tables of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 through activities such
as colouring the hundred chart.
(d) achieve mastery of multiplication and division facts by
- using multiplication-fact cards and division-fact cards.
- playing games, including applets and digital games.
- writing a family of 4 basic facts within the multiplication tables given any one of the basic facts
(e.g. 3 x 4 = 12, 4 x 3 = 12, 12 ÷ 4 = 3 and 12 ÷ 3 = 4 are a family of multiplication and division facts).
(e) work in groups to create word problems (with pictorial representation if necessary) involving
multiplication and division for other groups to solve.
(f) solve non-routine problems using heuristics such as ‘act it out’ and ‘draw a diagram’ and share
their ideas.

Misconceptions of fewer than, more than
Misconception:
More than, fewer than, less than
In problem sums, students have these misconceptions of knowing which is more, which is less. The crux to handling this is to ensure these terms have a partner to belong to. Normally, it is the nearest term closest to these words.
E.g. John sold 109 chickens on Monday. He sold 28 more chickens on Tuesday than on Monday.
The "more" term in this sentence is placed closer to Tuesday. In this case, the "more than" belongs to Tuesday.
Using logic, therefore, Tuesday is more, and hence Monday is lesser.
To help children, an arrow can be drawn from the word "more" to Tuesday.
Children have more difficulties with the term fewer and lesser than.
Another e.g. Jane sold 500 cakes on Friday. She sold 109 fewer cakes on Saturday than on Friday.
The "fewer" term in this sentence is placed closer to Saturday. In the case, the "fewer than" belongs to Saturday.
Using the same logic, therefore, Friday is more than Saturday.
To help children, an arrow can be drawn from the word "fewer" to Saturday.
Normally, children who are better read would not be facing these problems, and most of them can understand these easily. These tips will be useful for those who are still facing difficulties in identifying the "more than" and "fewer than" terms.

Revision for Chapter 1:
There were questions from 1 of the parents on Saturday as to how to help your child in Maths.
Things to note for this chapter. Refer to the contents page from the textbook. The things which they need to learn are all inside.
E.g. for Chapter 1:
1) Counting to 1000
2) Place Value
3) Comparing Numbers
4) Order and Pattern
5) Even and Odd numbers

Maths lesson -- Shapes
Things learnt for Mathematics:
Shapes:
They need to know and understand the following:
- Identify and name the four basic shapes (circle, square, triangle and rectangle)
- Describe and classify shapes
- Make / complete patterns with 2-D cutouts according to one or two of the following attributes: shape, size, colour
- Make / complete patterns with 3-D models: cube, cuboid (rectangular block), cone, cylinder
We have covered the 4 2-D shapes today. They are:

Square
Triangle
Rectangle
Please learn how to spell these 4 words. It will be tested in Mental sums.

Knowing the whole and the part, solving the other part using Subtraction.
2) Maths PSLE booklet: Worksheet 5 --> Comparison Model.
Comparing between 2 quantities, finding the difference using Subtraction.
3) Heuristics: Drawing a diagram, Looking for a pattern.
