Misconception in Multiplication

Correction of Misconception of Multiplication

Important:

The above picture shows 6 groups of 4, and not 4 groups of 6. 
When we represent this in the multiplication statement, this is 6 fours or 6 X 4. 
This is not 4 x 6 (known to be 4 groups of 6).

The answer to both question is of course 24, but when testing for the descriptor, this is 6 groups of 4, and hence 6 fours.

This diagram above will illustrate how we read this groups and number of items inside the group. 

The above can help to understand division, or to understand division made simpler.

Mathematics Key Vocabulary

Maths Language:

This was something we extracted over the holidays. The Maths Language which will be covered in P1.
For your good reading. :)

The students should be aware of all these key vocabulary.

Maths -- ordinal numbers

Things done and completed today:

The topic on Ordinal Numbers have been completed.
Ordinal Numbers stress on placing of the people, things in their positions.
They are also expected to be able to write and spell:

1st -- First
2nd -- Second
3rd -- Third
4th -- Fourth
5th -- Fifth
6th -- Sixth
7th -- Seventh
8th -- Eighth
9th -- Ninth
10th -- Tenth

Spelling on these words will be given out shortly during Mental Sums.

Within the topical worksheet, other words/phrases to be tested:
from the left / right, top/bottom.
They need to understand from where this is.

Other words: who is to win the race?
Who is in front of the queue -- meaning, the first in line
Who is the last? -- the furthest, away from the first.

Hypothetical Questions: If something is taken away, how is the placing being changed?
Strategy: cross out or cover up the one being taken away, then count the placing of the item.

Based on the previous unit review, the trend will be to have questions which are tougher and higher order.
However, the strategy remains: underline the key words, put down the placing (1st, 2nd, etc), then comprehend the question, and finally solving it. :)

Maths Language 2

Maths Language:

7 is smaller than _______.
Many of the students are still having difficulties in seeing that 7 is smaller than 8.
They would be writing that 7 is smaller than 6, which is actually the other way.
They can see that 7 is greater than 6.

Dear all,

There was a homework yesterday on Maths WS 1B.

Key concepts/Maths language: 
More than, greater than, Most,
Less than, fewer than, Least

The above concepts are very important as they are building blocks for problem solving.

Please spend time revising these concepts with your children. :)
Another way to show is by using the number line to show which numbers are bigger, which ones are smaller.
